A Reflection of Your Self-Image: Reclaim and Redefine Your Visual Narrative through Portraitanalysis with Moena Weiss at QLS
At Queer Life Space (QLS), we are excited to offer an exclusive opportunity to experience Portraitanalysis with Moena Weiss from June to July. This innovative approach aligns with QLS’s mission of providing holistic, queer-sensitive mental health support, offering a unique, creative pathway for self-discovery and empowerment.
What Is Portraitanalysis?
Portraitanalysis, developed by Moena Weiss, merges clinical psychology with portrait photography to encourage emotional growth, self-reflection, and empowerment. By using photography as a creative and therapeutic tool, participants can delve into their inner world and identity, creating a powerful visual narrative that enhances personal insight and complements traditional therapy.
Why Portraitanalysis?
For those seeking to better understand themselves or enrich their therapeutic journey, Portraitanalysis offers a safe, reflective space to explore themes of self-perception, vulnerability, and empowerment. This approach is especially meaningful for queer and BIPOC individuals, providing a platform to reclaim visibility, challenge societal narratives, and foster authentic self-acceptance.
How Does It Work?
The process begins with a portrait session, where Moena photographs participants, capturing images that reflect their identity and emotional state. Afterward:
Participants review the images and select three that resonate most deeply.
From these, they narrow their choice to one portrait for the Portrait Reflection Questionnaire.
The questionnaire serves as a tool for structured reflection and dialogue, encouraging deeper self-exploration.
Examples of Reflection Questions:
"What story does this image tell about you, and is it one you feel connected to or wish to change?"
"Make this person in the photo a heartfelt compliment—what would you tell them from the bottom of your heart?"
"How does seeing yourself through this portrait differ from how you believe others perceive you?"
"Does this portrait reveal a part of yourself you’ve hidden or struggled to express before?"
"What role does your personal or cultural history play in how you view this image?"
This process fosters emotional insight, helping participants uncover new aspects of their story and connect with their authentic selves.
How Does It Benefit Therapy?
Portraitanalysis complements traditional therapy by offering a visual and emotional perspective on self-expression. Through this process, participants:
Build confidence and emotional resilience.
Gain clarity on their personal narratives.
Integrate their visual self into their overall self-perception.
The portraits created in a safe, empowering environment serve as lasting tools for reflection, anchoring insights gained during the sessions.
