Yesterday at Queer LifeSpace, we celebrated International Non-Binary People's Day, an essential occasion to recognize and honor the contributions and experiences of non-binary individuals within the broader queer community. International Non-Binary People's Day is also the last day of Non-Binary Awareness Week, which begins on July 8 and ends on July 14. At Queer LifeSpace, our commitment to supporting the mental health and well-being of all queer individuals — regardless of sexual orientation or gender identity, including trans and non-binary people — remains steadfast and deeply rooted in our mission to provide inclusive, queer-affirming care.

Understanding Non-Binary Identities

International Non-Binary People's Day offered us a moment to reflect on the unique challenges faced by non-binary people. These challenges often stem from a society that struggles to understand and respect identities outside the male-female gender binary. This lack of understanding and, at times, intentional misgendering of individuals (i.e., not using the person's preferred pronouns) can lead to significant mental health issues — including anxiety, depression, social isolation, and suicidal ideation.

At Queer LifeSpace, we are acutely aware of these struggles and strive to offer a therapeutic environment where non-binary clients can explore gender expression authentically and affirm their identities without fear or constraint. We are proud that 15% of our clients identify as non-binary as of this writing (July 2024).

Vin Seaman, interdisciplinary artist and director of queer arts organization Diamond Wave, came to and fully accepted their nonbinary gender identity in 2020.

“Nonbinary people struggle to step into our authentic selves because we live in a modern society that has told us we don’t exist. The reaction to how we express ourselves can be uncomfortable, humiliating and sometimes dangerous. For me, therapy with Queer LifeSpace was an essential piece of self-acceptance.”

Seaman has since founded the THEYFRIEND Nonbinary Performance Festival with the mission of uplifting and centering nonbinary performers.

Supporting Non-Binary People Through an Inclusive Therapeutic Approach

Our therapy practices are designed to be inclusive of all queer identities, recognizing that non-binary people, alongside other transgender and queer individuals, navigate a world that frequently marginalizes them. We emphasize the importance of cultural competence in our clinical training program, ensuring our therapists are equipped to provide respectful and queer-affirming care. This includes using correct pronouns, correct gender markers, gender-neutral language, and names, understanding the specific mental health needs of non-binary individuals, and fostering a therapeutic space where all clients feel seen and validated.

The intersectionality of queer identities means that the challenges faced by non-binary people are often compounded by other aspects of their identity, such as race, socioeconomic status, and disability. Our approach at Queer LifeSpace is holistic and intersectional, aiming to address these other important, intersecting factors in order to provide more effective support.

To that end, we offer individual therapy that focuses on personal mental health challenges and trauma, as well as group therapy that creates a supportive community space. These services are vital for helping non-binary individuals build resilience and find solidarity within the broader queer community.

Non-Binary Advocacy in the LGBTQIA+ Community

Yesterday’s celebration also underscored the need for continued advocacy and support for non-binary people within our community. While Non-Binary People's Day spotlighted their experiences, our commitment to their well-being extends beyond a single day or week of awareness. At Queer LifeSpace, we are dedicated to creating lasting change by advocating for policies and practices that promote equity and inclusion for all members of the queer community.

For example, our team of clinicians is equipped to provide vital letters of support for Gender-Affirming Care for transgender clients. This service is particularly significant for low-income transgender clients, as it enables them to access the essential medical care they need without any financial burden. By eliminating the cost barrier, we ensure that trans people in California can receive the support they deserve, reaffirming our commitment to their overall health and well-being.

Non-Binary People's Day and Non-Binary Awareness Week may have passed, but the work to support and uplift non-binary identity continues. At Queer LifeSpace, we remain committed to providing the highest quality mental health care tailored to meet the unique needs and gender fluidity of our diverse queer community. Together, we can build a world where all queer individuals, regardless of their gender identity, feel supported, respected, and empowered.

For those seeking support or more information about our services, we encourage you to visit Queer LifeSpace. Our doors are always open to you.
