Art + Pride 2023: soft defiance Exhibition Opening and Performance Recap
On the evening of June 17th, the Harvey Milk Center for the Arts was transformed into a sanctuary of creativity, resilience, and love as it hosted the "soft defiance" Art Exhibition Opening. With a focus on centering mental health and wellness, the exhibition aimed to celebrate the well-being of the Queer Community. Let's delve into the captivating moments that made this opening night an unforgettable experience.
The soft defiance exhibition, on view at HMCA from June 17th to July 15th, features over thirty multidisciplinary artists whose works collectively celebrate well-being and mental health. This exhibition stands as a testament to the strength and resilience of the LGBTQIA+ community, reminding us all of the ongoing battle against negativity and hatred.
Attendees gathered in anticipation, viewing preshow videos by moonyeka, Edgar Fabián Frías, and Vin Seaman. These visual narratives captured the essence of soft defiance, challenging negativity and hatred with an unwavering commitment to personal mental health. The captivating performances by drag artists Jota Mercury, Linty, and Pangaea enthralled the audience, effortlessly blending art, activism, and self-expression.
A key event performance was the stand-up comedy routine by Matthew Beld. Through laughter, Beld invited everyone to find strength in shared experiences, fostering a sense of community that resonated with the underlying message of soft defiance.
Another evening highlight was the enchanting theatrical dance performance by Vin Seaman & Zackary Forcum. The performance challenged societal norms and expectations, encouraging attendees to embrace their true selves and question the hardness of the status quo.
Let us celebrate the beauty of soft defiance, a profound act of resistance that starts from within. Together, we can create a world where everyone feels seen, heard, and embraced for who they truly are.
The exhibition also offers a range of events throughout the month, including artist talks, workshops, and a wellness symposium. soft defiance was made in collaboration with The Harvey Milk Center for the Arts, Diamond Wave, and Queer LifeSpace.
